Review: This Side of the Grave (Night Huntress #5) by Jeaniene Frost

Published: February 22, 2011
Publisher: Avon
Format: Paperback
Series: Night Huntress
My rating: 5/5 stars

Synopsis from Goodreads:

Danger waits on both sides of the grave.

Half-vampire Cat Crawfield and her vampire husband Bones have fought for their lives, as well as for their relationship. But just when they've triumphed over the latest battle, Cat's new and unexpected abilities threaten to upset a long-standing balance . . .

With the mysterious disappearance of vampires, rumors abound that a species war is brewing. A zealot is inciting tensions between the vampires and ghouls, and if these two powerful groups clash, innocent mortals could become collateral damage. Now Cat and Bones are forced to seek help from a dangerous "ally"; the ghoul queen of New Orleans herself. But the price of her assistance may prove more treacherous than even the threat of a supernatural war . . . to say nothing of the repercussions Cat never imagined.

This Side of the Grave is yet another creative masterpiece from Jeaniene Frost. Bones and Cat always put a smile on my face, no matter what situation they find themselves in. This book was no different, and it was delightfully filled with romance, tense situations, butt-kicking and an adrenaline-filled plot that had me completely absorbed!

Cat and Bones face a serious threat in the form of an old, creepy ghoul named Apollyon. He's spreading lies about Cat and is trying to incite a war between vampires and ghouls. During Cat's quest to take Apollyon down, she has encounters with the Ghoul Queen of New Orleans, which proves to be quite educational and interesting to say the least.

I really like the Ghoul Queen, Marie. She's very cunning and not entirely trust-worthy but she's always entertaining when she's present in the story. Her aiding Cat in finding a solution to the possible species war comes with some scary--but also pretty cool--results. Cat develops new powers that are frightening, lethal, and just plain bad-ass! Her powers also result in A LOT of ghost activity, which I enjoyed.

Aside from all of the excitement with the ghouls and ghosts, Cat also has to deal with some heart-wrenching family situations, which had me feeling a little distraught. But the ending of this book opened up new possibilities that had me a little startled but also pleased! I can't wait to see what will happen next.
