Published: October 30, 2007
Publisher: Avon
Format: Paperback
Series: Night Huntress
Genre: Paranormal, Romance, Urban Fantasy
My rating: 5/5 stars

Synopsis from Goodreads:

Half-vampire Catherine Crawfield is going after the undead with a vengeance, hoping that one of these deadbeats is her father—the one responsible for ruining her mother’s life. Then she’s captured by Bones, a vampire bounty hunter, and is forced into an unholy partnership.

In exchange for finding her father, Cat agrees to train with the sexy night stalker until her battle reflexes are as sharp as his fangs. She’s amazed she doesn’t end up as his dinner—are there actually good vampires? Pretty soon Bones will have her convinced that being half-dead doesn’t have to be all bad. But before she can enjoy her newfound status as kick-ass demon hunter, Cat and Bones are pursued by a group of killers. Now Cat will have to choose a side... and Bones is turning out to be as tempting as any man with a heartbeat.

I think it's safe to say that I've quickly taken a liking to this series! Halfway to the Grave is the first book in the Night Huntress series, and it is wrought with sensational characters and a fast-paced and deliciously addictive plot. The author does such a phenomenal job of weaving together action, paranormal, fantasy, and romance to produce an outstanding story. Cat, the heroine, is a smart-mouthed, sassy, intelligent and deadly chick. I will happily get sucked into her world any day of the week!

Cat is a woman in her early twenties who is half-vampire. In her spare time she slays vampires, and she's pretty good at it--luring them in with her sexy clothes and the false promise of a good time, only to stake them as soon as they're most vulnerable and don't see it coming. She's been led to believe for a long time now that basically all vampires are evil, demonic creatures up to no good. Her heart-breaking and complicated relationship with her mother has led her down this path, but Cat's beliefs are soon challenged when she comes into contact with a very powerful and cunning vampire named Bones. Finding herself in a compromising position, Cat agrees to make a deal with Bones; he'll train her to become a stronger and more capable fighter, and she'll help him catch some very dangerous vampires he's after by acting as bait (her usual strategy). This deal results in a lot of time spent together, which makes their strong chemistry and attraction to one another even harder for Cat to ignore.

I honestly don't know if I've ever come across two characters who had more of a connection than Cat and Bones! Their love is just so completely RIGHT. Their bickering was funny and real, as was Cat's denial and insecurities regarding her feelings for Bones. Bones is the perfect blend of a naughty bad boy with a sensitive side--which he only reveals to certain people (plus, he has a heavy English accent! YUM!). These two have such intensity and magnetic allure, and Bones has so much tenderness and affection for Cat that it breaks my heart a little! There's also a lot of desire between them that practically radiates off the pages. And, speaking of desire, Jeaniene Frost is wickedly good at producing some steamy love scenes! I really felt like my book was going to spontaneously combust from the amount of heat between Cat and Bones at times.

Aside from the spectacular romance, there are many other elements of this book to love. For one, Cat gets pulled into a mysterious web of danger that leads her and Bones to play detective in order to eliminate a serious threat to her, as well as the human female population. They make such a great team and I laughed out loud several times along the way while they worked together to track down the bad guys. I especially enjoyed when Cat was underestimated by her enemies. The end result was her kicking some serious butt, which was an entertaining and adrenaline-filled ride. Some of the interesting and colorful secondary characters that are introduced throughout this novel also add a pinch of intrigue to the mix. I especially enjoyed Cat's encounter with a ghost (which was hilarious), and her brief introduction to a ghoul (yes, a GHOUL!) named Rodney.

This book left me open-mouthed, wide-eyed, and eager to start the next book in this series. Halfway to the Grave is the book for you if you want to embark on an invigorating journey with a heroine who has an exciting life filled with the supernatural and romance. I will definitely continue to read this series and I am fully prepared to be dazzled by Cat and Bones once again!

Here are some memorable quotes I liked from this book:

"Come to think of it, pet, you are a liar, possessor of false identification, and a murderer."
"Your point?" I snapped.
"Not to mention a tease," he continued as if I hadn't spoken. "Foulmouthed, as well. Yep, you and I will get along famously." -Bones and Cat

"Kitten, you need to make a decision. Either we stay here and behave or we leave now and I promise you"---his voice dipped lower and the words fell against my lips---"if we leave, I won't behave."
"Decide now, luv, because I can't take much more of this before I make up your mind and carry you off." -Bones

  1. I haven't read this series but I have read book 1 of the spin off and the Christmas novella and it's pretty obvious these two are PNR hall of famers. Love your review Shanon!
