Review: Vamplayers by Rusty Fischer

Published: December 13, 2011
Publisher: Medallion Press
Format: Paperback, 332 pages
Genre: Fiction, Paranormal, Young Adult
My rating: 5/5 stars

Synopsis from goodreads:

At the Afterlife Academy of Exceptionally Dark Arts, Lily Fielding is a measly trainee who dreams of one day becoming a Savior—those who visit vampire-infested high schools and put down the undead with their deadly crossbows. When Lily and her classmates Alice and Cara begin their latest assignment, it seems like just another run-of-the-mill gig: they’re to simply spot the Vamplayer—part vampire, part player—identify the popular girl he’s set his sights on, and befriend her before the Vamplayer can turn her to do his bidding. Before long, however, the Vamplayer sets his sights on Lily's friends, and she is left to face the threat alone while protecting her friends from the dark forces she has sworn to resist.

*I won this book from a goodreads giveaway held by the author. Thanks, Rusty Fischer, for sending me this book!*

I pretty much love everything about this book. The cover, the writing style, the many different characters--it's all awesome! Overall the plot is exciting, consistent and easy to follow. Plus there was just enough romance to keep me happy. When I first read the description of the book I knew it would be something I'd enjoy because I like all things vampire, and it was clear that this would be a vampire story unlike any I've ever read. The author provides the reader with a fresh take on vampires but still leaves them with several familiar traits that I've come to know and love over the years. Also, Rusty Fischer is just plain hilarious, I can't even keep track of how many times I laughed throughout this book!

I instantly liked Lily, the main character. She's a part of a special three person team of vampires whose sole purpose is to track down and stop Vamplayers--which are vampire studs who wreak havoc on high schools by turning young impressionable girls, who then create an infestation of hungry vampires that gets out of hand. Lily and her team are called The Sisterhood of Dangerous Girlfriends, and they get dispatched to several different high schools a year to go undercover as students and prevent infestations.

Lily is ranked Third Sister and she is an incredibly funny and kick-butt chick, and she has her own unique and clumsy sort of charm. Her back story was really sad but also pretty interesting. Her two Sisters, Alice and Cara, are so different from her but yet they complimented eachother well--like puzzle pieces that fit together. They always provided me with plenty of chuckles. Also, I just LOVE Zander and Grover! They are two geeky guys that cracked me up and befriended Lily at school when no one else would. Zander is seriously ADORKABLE (adorable, but a dork)! He and Lily made me smile when they were together. So cute!

Lily's suspicions as to who the Vamplayer was led her on quite a journey and kept me very entertained. She was definitely under a lot of pressure and responsibility to figure this out. The suspected Vamplayer, Tristan, is one of those characters where you both like and dislike him, and that much is clear from Lily's interactions with him. Speaking of dislike, Bianca was so wretched! She fit into the story really well with her mean, popular girl tendencies. It was fun trying to guess who the real Vamplayer was and the ending was so good!

Rusty Fischer has a delightful writing style and I will be sure to check out his other books because if they are anything like this one, I know I'll enjoy them. And I don't usually do this but here are some funny quotes in the book that I just had to make note of and share because they had me laughing out loud:

Lily- "It was an accident, you guys. I was supposed to quick pop in, pop out, but Zander's hose went off and Grover lost it and I got all wet and---"
Alice- "Hold up, hold up. Are we still in the kitchen by this point, or are you describing what happened in the geeks' room?"

Grover- "What? You said nothing happened last night." Grover pushes him away, totally missing the point. "You lied to me, bro?"
Zander- "Uh, Grover. I think Lily being a vampire trumps your hurt feelings, 'kay?"
Grover- "I think you underestimate the pain of my hurt feelings, brother!"

Lily- "Don't play dumb." I hiss, snapping back my head so that the fangs pop out. "We both know why I'm here."
Tristan- "Are those real"?
Grover- "Trust me, dude, they're all her and they're all real."
