Secrets and Shadows

I just finished reading Secrets and Shadows, the second book in the "13 to Life" series, by Shannon Delany. I must say that I liked this book better than the first one, and I really liked the first one! In the second book, we get to see a lot more of Pietr's siblings. Jessica forms closer bonds and friendships with Max and Cat especially, and I was quite amused by their characters at times. I was literally cracking up, quite loudly I might add, at work and at home while I was reading this book. Jessica says and thinks some pretty humorous things, at least in my opinion. The main goal in this book is to get someone back that is precious to the Rusakova family, and they all work together in trying to find a way to this person. We also find out some pretty interesting facts about certain other characters and it becomes pretty clear that no one is as they seem. Pietr is distant and pulls away from Jessica, which is cliche (always in the second book!). But things eventually work themselves out...sort of. When I first started this series I thought that it was going to basically just be about werewolves, but I was incredibly wrong. There is so much more to the story than that. The Russian Mafia, the USSR, The Cold War, psychics, social manipulators, energy vampires, scientists, the CIA and so on all play a part in this series. It's quite entertaining. The end of this book is a big "WHAT-THE-HELL-IS-HAPPENING??", but I was surprisingly okay with that. I have some theories about what I will find out in the next book, but until that one comes out, I am left with anticipation and speculation. =)
